cover girls

When I stumbled on these vintage magazine covers, I'm surprised by the exquisite artwork and creativity.
Looking through today's magazine covers - particularly those of women's magazines - it's always the same thing: a heavily retouched close up of the latest celebrity. That's it. I don't know about you, but I find it increasingly boring. I'm not even complaining about the retouching (we've heard it all before), it's just so repetitive and DULL.
In comparison, these are simply works of art:

These illustrations are so soft and lovely.Must say I love their headbands, and the left girl's collar.

It's all about big feather gowns.

I wish I could read that piece on "What career will you choose" in the Shrine magazine. I wonder what the hot career options were in 1928.

contrast: naughty (look closely, that's not a piece of chocolate) and nice (but then who knows what she's putting into her mix).

well and also that its usually a close up just of the face whereas these tell much more of a story but i guess if its so and so celeb on the cover you want to make sure that person face is what you see but yeah i agree with you its pretty boring!

I love the first cover, what a lovely 1920s lass!
If magazines still looked like that methinks I would be a pauper. :D!

These are so wonderful--I can't pick a favorite. There is something unrealistic in illustrations too...but it's a dreamy perfection rather than the over waxed and slim models...

if only magazine covers were still like this.

Hard decision. They are all amazing.

And you´re absolutely right, those belong to a time when making magazine covers was an art.
We only have to remember examples like Toulouse lautrec making flyers for the cabarets!

I think I love the next to last one. But they are all amzaing

These are all amazing! You're right- most magazine covers these days are just completely boring. I wish this sort of illustration would come back in style!

Lovely, such a fan of old illustrations. Isn't it sad that we so rarely see that in magazines now.

I do agree with you to a certain extent. These are gorgeous. The top right hand is my favourite - the sheer fabric is breathtaking; so lifelike! However, the covers of magazines, I think, are rightful works of art themselves - photography, styling, concept, mood. It takes a different kind of eye and creativity to put a successful cover together. Even what retouchers do in terms of technology and their amazing use of digital packages like Adobe is a skill that I also appreciate. I love new and old things equally, I think.
