ordinary, extra-ordinary

The above photo is of an old scarf I thrifted ages ago. I took this photo for the "Photograph the Ordinary" challenge at Mausumi. I like the little houses print on it. Should probably have ironed it first, but oh well, I'll just say the wrinkly creases add to the character, no?

Speaking of challenges, you may remember my blog post about the Slow Readers Book Club. Well the timeframe to read the first book (Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls) has just finished, and I was very pleased to take part in it. I got my book from the library, and it's front cover is as pictured here. I noticed it's different to most, so I'm assuming this is the international cover. Despite the name of the book club, this wasn't a very slow read at all. However, I'm not going to lie, the main reason I finished most of the book within 2 days was because it was due back in the library that soon (oops)! Luckily, it really was an easy book to devour quickly. It was very well written, and was split into many short chapters, which I actually like. Lily is such an extraordinary and feisty character, and you can't help but admire and respect her throughout the whole book. It covers the important milestones of her life - as well as the often harsh life lessons she learns along the way. For a book about a person's life, it is pretty concise, and I can't help but feel sometimes it's too concise and I'm often left wanting more. I also find it's an interesting insight to a completely different life, time, culture, country than my own. Nevertheless, the timeless and universal theme of fighting hard and never giving up is something that makes this book enjoyable and inspiring for anyone.

I like your cover better, Anna! :)

This is a great review, and even if it meant giving you a bit of a kick to read it quicker, it's a great reason!

The little houses are very cute indeed and yes I think the creases brings more creation to it (:

Awe that's like me, when I use to borrow books from the library I would read them in a zilch because of it's due date and that's what made me love reading so much but then when I started to buy books I've been leaving them on my shelves, but aye, we've got our whole life to read the books on our shelves (:

Take care dear & have a e tea-riffic day!

I have yet to read Half Broke Horses. I am, however, nearly finished with Walls' book Glass Castel. It is astonishing the life that she lived as a child. I will have to pick up Half Broke Horses soon. :)

What a cute print!

After seeing the cover of your book I didn't think it was something I'd like to read, but after reading your review I got really curious. I think the slow readers bookclub is such a great idea!

I love the cover of the copy you read! I ended up buying a hardback copy because I was the 8th in line for the book at my local library. Loved the book as well, even though I was through it too quickly.

This was the cover I had too - and I like it better - I think it says much more about Lily's character! It was a good big chunky book too. I liked getting a grip on that! I'm also excited to see what the next book is going to be...

I've noticed the different cover on someone else's review as well: I like it!

I think the book would have normally been a quick read for me, but since I bought it and we had such a long time to read it, I reeealllly stretched it out. :) To be entirely honest, I found The Glass Castle to be a bit more interesting -- read it if you get the chance!
