sponsor spotlight: For the Easily Distracted

Today I bring you an interview with Rhianne - the wonderful lady behind the photography shop For the easily distracted, as well as a blog of the same name.

1. Hi Rhianne! Let's start with you telling us a bit about yourself.

Hi! My name is Rhianne and and I love to blog and take photos. I also love the beach, dark chocolate, puppies, my analogue cameras, mustard yellow and roast vegetables. I live in England and I try to take my film cameras everywhere with me.

2. When did you start getting into photography?

I've always loved taking photos, I remember playing with an old instamatic camera when I was little all the time however I didn't get back into film photography seriously until 2009 when I brought my first toy camera, my holga 135bc - things took off from there and I've been buying more cameras and films to experiment with ever since.

3. How would you describe your photography style?

Opportunistic most of the time. I don't plan photos, I don't wait for the sun to hit the right spot or go to certain places to get certain shots... I feel like I'm searching for something but I don't know what until I see it and I want to remember it. Then I take a photo of it and just try to capture of much of it as I can in that one click. Most of my photos are of landscapes or static street objects, like telephone boxes, sign posts, buildings... I like the idea of trying to show other people how I see things that I see all the time.

4. What do you love about shooting with film as opposed to digital?

I think its the challenge... the idea of capturing as much light as you can in one click and it being exposed permenantly onto the negative. You can't check it to see how it looks and then delete it if its rubbish - you have one shot, one chance to make that photo count, to collect as much of that moment as you can and for it to be amazing. I love a challenge!

5. Favourite camera and film to shoot with:

Oh, this is quite hard as it changes constantly. I love my little holga and my superheadz yellow peace but right now I'm in a bit of a diana mini phase and I am loving Lomography's redscale film - it adds a completely different dimension to your photos that can take them completely out of their original context which I love. Also it edits so well to black and white - its almost like you're getting two photos for the price of one and they look and feel so different.

6. Favourite photo you've taken (please show us, and tell us a bit about it):

This is hard too as it changes all the time as well, however I'm going to decide on this photo: Winter Moon.

Photo28_24A

I took this photo after we got back from Krakow and I needed to finish off my holga roll - I took the camera to work and just clicked away, there was no intention behind it, just the joy of taking photos. It was the end of the roll so it wasn't even meant to be a double exposure so I love this photo for the surprise of it as much as the final result.

7. Is there anything new/different you'd like to try, photography-wise?

I desperately want an LC-A camera but I'm going to be patient and wait until I an truly afford it and I'll have the time to really appreciate it. I also really want to try cross processing film and experiment with more intentional double exposures, I love the unpredictable nature of some aspects of film photography.

8. What inspires you?

People constantly inspire me, especially through blogging - I've met so many talented and creative people who have such amazing outlooks on life that its hard to feel dispondent and negative when there is so much to be inspired by in the world. I love looking at other people photos too - how they see life, how they differ from mine and how they reflect the photographer. Even if you stood two people in the same place with the same camera their photos would be different somehow and I love that.

9. If you could go ANYWHERE in the world (with your cameras of course!), where would you want to go and what do you want to take photos of?

Everywhere! Europe, Japan, Australia, America. I would love to see it all and capture it all. Top of my list at the moment though is Paris, we're going later this year and I can't wait to take photos of everything - the eiffel tower, the architecture, the bridges(!) perhaps even the people. I want to experience as much as I can!

Thank you Rhianne!
Make sure you check out Rhianne's Etsy shop for her beautiful photography prints :)

Love: the Finders Keepers market!

Melbourne's art and craft community (and beyond) were buzzing over the Finders Keepers market this weekend. I went there on Saturday, and had SO much fun. I met some wonderful people, browsed through dozens of beautiful stalls, and of course I bought a lot of beautiful goodies too! Unfortunately I was too busy shopping and totally forgot to take photos :( Luckily, a number of other Melbourne bloggers did take terrific photos for you to see, such as designani (who took the above photo), handmadelove, meet me at mikes, and bee & see creative. They have lovely blogs too, so do check them out! If anyone else has blogged about the market, let me know in the comments :)

laurent

camera: Wide Lens Superheadz, film: Lucky black and white film, SHD 100

Photos taken outside of Laurent, a French patisserie in the city. Friends and I had afternoon desserts there yesterday (I had the pear tart, which was sooo good!). The food and decor of the place made me feel like we were actually in a quaint cafe in Paris - or at least that's what I imagine it would be like. If anything, it certainly got us talking excitedly about travelling to Europe one day.

The place is in a small laneway, so there wasn't much light and these photos look a bit dark (although I think the darkness is due to my low ISO film as well). I do like how the bright sunlight that does come through just hits the tables and chairs, highlighting them nicely and creating sharp shadows. Go to Hey Harriet to see more shadow shots today.

if i were an animal i would be...

I adore these sweet illustrations by Kareena Zerefos, especially that first one with the 2 children holding hands. I think of sibling tenderness when I see it and it reminds me of my big brother and I. Not that we ever dressed up as canaries though, but I'm sure we played our fair share of make believe games. These illustrations are a part of the "if i were an animal i would be..." series.
So, what animal would you like to be?
(a penguin or a giraffe for me!)

weekend watching: west side story

I just watched the 1961 movie adaptation of West Side Story. I've never seen the stage show, but I really enjoyed this movie. Definitely a must see for fans of musicals. The choreography and the classic songs are absolutely terrific (I tracked down the soundtrack CD right after watching this!). West Side Story won 10 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Costume Design. It seems that I can't watch an old movie without paying close attention to what they're wearing, and I loved all the 50s outfits here! For some reason it wasn't any of the main cast's outfits that stood out to me (although they were all great), but it was actually one of the side character's: Velma's (the blonde) tiered light blue dress. It's not a particular style that I'd usually like, but that sassy Velma was totally working that dress during the dance scene. "Ooo-beelee-oo..."

Have you seen West Side Story? Or have you seen a stage production of it?

TGIF

camera: Olympus OM-10 SLR, film: Lucky black and white film SHD 100

Okay, so this blog is the land of Much Love Mondays, but right now Friday is looking pretty darn awesome too! So exhausted after my first work week and looking forward to just lazing about tonight and on the weekend. Another plus about today is that I finally managed to pick up my latest black and white film photos even though they were ready since Monday (hooray for Friday's late night shopping hours in the city!).

shadows, knitting, and spots of red

Spent all day yesterday at a knitting get-together, hosted by my friend Jennifer (who was wearing that super cute print dress you see in that 2nd pic!). It was a really nice way to spend a Saturday: having girly chats, making a new friend (hi Rene!), devouring tea and nibbles, and making progress with my long red scarf. Oh, and also capturing some shadows by the window! Submitting that first photo for Shadow Shot Sunday at Hey Harriet.

Can't wait to start wearing my first ever red scarf! Also, notice the pops of red in all the photos?
